The Why
The U.S. rate of maternal mortality (the death of a woman while pregnant or within 1 year of the end of pregnancy from any cause related to or worsened by the pregnancy or it’s management) is more than triple the next highest country in its economic group with a pandemic spike possibly related to restriction of already limited access to obstetric and postnatal care.

For every maternal mortality, it is estimated that 20 or 30 more experience significant lifelong complications that affect their health and well-being. These are called maternal morbidities.
Sadly 4 in 5 pregnancy related deaths in the U.S. are PREVENTABLE.
According to the CDC the leading underlying causes of pregnancy-related death mainly fall into mental health and cardiac system:
Over 75% happen in the postnatal period.
Aside from the obvious cost of maternal death, the impact of maternal morbidity is burdensome and multilayered
So what do other high-income countries have that we don't?
Free/affordable primary care including comprehensive reproductive/maternal health care
Federally mandated paid and extended parental leave
Earlier and frequent postnatal checks in home or at office
Large midwifery workforce to supplement physician maternal providers
Government supported postnatal retreats, support packages or home services for new families
This means that not only does the U.S. have a higher risk population of mothers, we also lack the medical infrastructure to support and guide women through the highest risk period postnatally.
-
Educating mothers about their healing bodies
Teaching new parents how to care for their newborns
Providing a community of support for families in the postnatal stage
Supporting traditional healthcare providers in the care of their patients
Alleviating stress on the already stretched maternal and pediatric medical care system
Adding more voices to advocate for expanded parental leave laws in the U.S.
